影片根據(jù)亨利�！ぢ�恩的同名小說(shuō)改編。講述1563的法國(guó)，新教徒和天主教徒因?yàn)橥恋睾托叛龅淖诮虘?zhàn)爭(zhēng)。新教的首領(lǐng)納瓦拉·亨利在巴黎組織武裝，以對(duì)抗強(qiáng)大的天主教徒，他的母親，法國(guó)王太后凱薩琳·德·美第奇。公元1572年，信仰天主教的王室為結(jié)束戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)，決定與新教徒的首領(lǐng)納瓦爾國(guó)王亨利聯(lián)姻，身為國(guó)王妹妹的瑪格麗特公主，自然成為了政治婚姻的犧牲品。婚禮在巴黎舉行，瑪格麗特嫁給了納瓦爾的亨利，就在眾人歡慶婚禮之時(shí)，巴黎城所有的鐘聲都敲響了，在凱薩琳王太后的策劃下，一場(chǎng)針對(duì)新教徒的大屠殺拉開帷幕，整個(gè)法國(guó)血流成河，這就是西方歷史上著名的慘案——“圣巴托羅繆之夜”。后來(lái)又經(jīng)過(guò)數(shù)年的戰(zhàn)亂，亨利成為了波旁王朝的開國(guó)之君——亨利四世，瑪格麗特也從法國(guó)公主變成了法國(guó)王后，史稱瑪格麗特皇后。然而這對(duì)新人從未真正相愛過(guò)，他們各自都有情人……
