Stanley Phillips從小滿懷愛國之情，一心想從軍為國效力，可惜自己的糟糕的視力讓他的人生朝夢想愈行愈遠。 如今的他成了一家普通賣場的中層職員，與年輕時相戀的女友結婚并育有兩個女兒，12歲的Heidi和8歲的Dawn。妻子Grace在美軍服役，美伊開戰(zhàn)后被派往前線，留下Stanley獨自照看女兒們。

姑娘們聰明可人。姐姐Heidi有些早熟，平日里時時照看妹妹，為Stanley分擔著做父母的責任。妹妹Dawn天真無邪，世界對她來說仍然是個充滿魔力的游樂場，只是媽媽不在家的日子里，小家伙心里多少有了點憂郁。

這天，平日里木訥刻板的Stanley一反常態(tài)的提出帶姐妹倆外出晚餐，甚至在歸途中同意了Dawn想去位于弗洛里達的'Enchanted Gardens'的愿望。當孩子們?yōu)橥蝗缙鋪淼?好運氣'歡喜雀躍的時候，她們所不知道的是，父親Stanley的內(nèi)心正被巨大的悲痛煎熬著，她們的媽媽Grace在戰(zhàn)場上捐軀了。

人生不遂心愿，始終郁郁寡歡的Stanley面對喪妻的噩耗選擇了逃避。在朝'魔幻花園'一路前進的旅途中，他一邊竭力滿足孩子們愿望，一邊痛苦掙扎著，該如何告訴她們，媽媽永遠不會回來了。

Grace is gone 的投資成本僅300萬美元，拍攝周期29天， 是絕對意義上的小成本制作。 導演James C。 Strouse是本片的編劇，這是他的第二個電影劇本，原本片方選定的導演中途退出更使臨危受命的James有了自己的導演處女作。

應該說作為主演兼制作人的John Cusak對電影的誕生貢獻頗巨，從與制片方談判到具體的選角，演出，制作，發(fā)行都是他一人獨挑大梁。而Clint Eastwood親自操刀為本片創(chuàng)作原聲音樂，以及在圣丹斯上一舉奪得'觀眾票選'和'最佳劇本'使得這部小制作未映先紅，在圈內(nèi)引起了廣泛的關注
